Fall 2013 Nails – My Top 14 Fall Polish Picks

Standard

Have you been pondering your fall polish wardrobe? I have been pondering fall polishes forever! Fall polishes are my favorite, so I always anticipate a bit.

Here’s what’s on the top of my list for 2013. Some of these are new, some aren’t. Some of these I have, some I don’t…and some I will pick up soon! (I tried to include where to get the indie polishes if you’re a Usian.)

14. Pretty Serious Seasonal Sunset (Christmas Without Snow collection, Winter 2012)

Image courtesy of Pretty Purple Polish.

Christmas in autumn? What? Although it’s in a Christmas collection, this rusty orange polish screams fall to me. (Pretty Serious is based in Australia, where Christmas is in the middle of summer, which sounds AWESOME. But I digress.)

Happily, I just picked this up through a blog sale, and I gotta say I love it. The formula was very smooth (not super thin, but opaque in 2-3 coats), and the color had just enough POP to make me wear the heck out of it. I believe you can get this at Llarowe if the polish gods are kind and a restock goes your way…

13. CrowsToes Heartshaped Box of Horses#@T (ValenCrows collection, Valentine’s 2013)

Image courtesy of More Nail Polish.

Again, this is a winter polish, but I love the sparkly brown and gold, plus the name…lulz! I just saw this was in stock at Llarowe. Yay!

12. Glitter Gal – Belgian Chocolate

Image courtesy of Ashley is Polish Addicted.

Mmmm, tasty! I’ve decided I have a thing for brown and block holos this fall, and this is one of the first that caught my eye. This one is occasionally available at Llarowe and Ninja Polish.

11. Colors by Llarowe – Burnt Sugar

Brown holo again! This is obviously from Llarowe. i don’t have it yet, but I’m putting it on the ol’ wish list.

10. Ninja Polish – 100% Columbian (The Enigmas collection)

The depth in this picture seems incredible to me! Although Pointless always takes great pictures, I’ve gotta say, I’ve seen a lot of good pictures of this one, so maybe it’s just generally gorgeous. This is going on my Ninja Polish wish list.

9. China Glaze Budding Romance (Avant Garden Collection, Spring 2013)

I KNOW! It’s a spring polish. But it’s such a nice “pretty-ugly” shade of green! It’s not one of the typical spring pastels in my book. Plus, I’m old and l live the in Midwest, so I make up my own fashion rules!

8. Bad Ass Polish Chocolate Covered Cherry

Image courtesy of I Heart Pretty Polish.

Bad Ass Polish is one of those smaller indies that has great ideas! They took my brown holo and put a little red in it – two, two two shades in one! I really want to eat this model’s fingers, and I don’t even like real chocolate covered cherries. Available from the Bad Ass polish website.

6. and 7. Zoya Flynn and Louise (Cashmeres and Satins collection, Fall 2013)

Zoya Flynn

I could have kicked myself that I didn’t pick these up during Zoya’s buy one get one back-to-school sale. (Who buys polish for back-to-school? I guess I would!) I’m constantly in a search for a good muted yellow like Flynn. And Louise is such a lovely brown polish.

5. OPI Peace, Love, and OPI (San Francisco collection, Fall 2013)

I’ve got several dupes of this, but I bet the formula and coverage is great. I’ve been eyeing it ever since the collection came out. For me, it’s the clear standout if the collection.

3. and 4. China Glaze Ick-A-Body and Zombie Zest (Awakening collection, Halloween 2010)

No mainstream polish does Halloween like China Glaze! I probably could have chosen all their Halloween polishes for this list, but I limited it to the ones I own. I always put on Zombie Zest while watching the premiere of The Walking Dead. Mmmm…brains!

2. Above the Curve Fallen Angel

Above the Curve is one of those indie brands you should know! They’re steadily gaining in popularity, and if you follow them on Facebook, they have some fun giveaways on Fridays. They give some of their proceeds to a very worthy cause, too – Shriner’s Hospital for Children.

I’m really looking forward to their fall collection. (And ATC, what’s up with that awesome greeny-gold polish? You must have made that just for me!) But until then, I’m jonesing for Fallen Angel. Fallen Angel is a black-based holo with purple and pink and blue glass flecks. I also want to try Fallen Angel 2.0, which is a bit more of a linear holo than the original Fallen Angel. You can order from their Big Cartel site.

1. KB Shimmer Quantum Leaf

SQUEEE!!! I’ve wanted this polish forever. FOR. EVER. It’s like fall in a bottle. I got it for my birthday in July, and I’m not touching it until at least the first official day of fall. I mean, the mustard yellow base, the orange/red/gold glitters, even the name – it makes me want to buy 27 decorative gourds and mull some cider with the Great Pumpkin! Arrrrgh! In other words, I’ll be trying this one soon. I don’t see it available on their website – I hope they’ll restock!

So, what are you going to wear in the coming months? Are you going to stick with fall colors? Start the holiday season early? Is it spring where you’re at? (Or is it spring in your mind, and you plan to break out the pastels or neons?)

[Disclosure note: the pictures above are not mine – however, they are all linked to their original sites. Consult those sites for further disclosure information regarding polish sources . No polishes were provided to me for review, and any reviews of these polishes are from polishes that I purchased.]

Easter nails – Pysanky! (Ukranian Easter Eggs)

Standard

It does NOT seem like it’s almost Easter.  Nope.  Uh-uh.  It’s March 24, and it just snowed about 4″ (and it hasn’t stopped).  This is unbelievable.

And yet, I must accept the fact that Easter is next week!  Know why?  Because my friend Katie P. (Her name is Katie, but I always add the “P.” because Facebook tells me to) clued me in that there is a spring nail art contest over at Lydia’s Nails.  I hadn’t planned on entering, but I’m snowbound, and the wheels in my head started turning, and voila.

Those wheels in my head came up with the idea of painting my nails like pysanky, or Ukranian Easter eggs.  My dad’s dad’s family comes from a region of the world that could have been Poland, or maybe the Ukraine, possibly Austria. (If you know world history, you know that region is messy.)  In any event, they’re Slavic, but they didn’t do anything specifically Slavic to celebrate the holiday. Easter to us meant going to Mass, Easter baskets, and a lot of ham.

However, I was  introduced to pysanka (plural term) when I met my husband, whose dad’s family is Slovak and also Byzantine Catholic.  Easter is a big deal to these folks – enough that part of their celebration involves spending  hours making complicated Easter eggs by dipping eggs into wax, scraping off a design, dipping the eggs in dye, and repeating over and over and over.  The end result is these incredibly delicate (and therefore sometimes temporary) works of art.

Given the intricate designs of pysanky, as well as the frustration level of the process, I think any nail artist can relate!

I’ve attempted to make pysanka before, and it didn’t go well.  But I figured I could make an easy approximation on my nails.  I think it turned out OK!  I know that the colors don’t necessarily scream Easter-peeps-jelly-beans-super-pastel-daffodils, but this is how a pysanky looks.  The colors and designs have  significance, so I tried to go as traditional as possible.

The designs I picked are: pointer finger is wheat (good health / good harvest); the middle finger is a net (Jesus & fishing); ring finger is curls (defense & protection); and pinky is pine needles (health / stamina / eternal youth).

PysankyAll

The thumb is a deer for wealth / prosperity.  You can see the deer better in this picture:

Pysankythumb

All of it was hand-drawn, except for using some striping tape on the ring and pinky fingers for the main straight lines.

Colors used are as follows:

Base colors –

Thumb: OPI Dating a Royal

Pointer: Sally Girl Banana

Middle: Finger Paints Paper Mache (my favorite white creme)

Ring: China Glaze Salsa (my favorite red creme)

Pinky: Wet N Wild Black creme (my favorite black creme – so affordable, and such good coverage!

Nail art was done with Stripe Right black, white, and green stripers, and a Sinful Colors red striper.  Also, the underlayer of the ring and pinky fingers is Finger Painter Paper Mache, which was the base of the striping tape.

I hope you enjoy the design!  And to anyone who’s here from Lydia’s Nails, feel free to follow me on Facebook and Twitter.

Sally Hansen Copper Penny – Adele’s Golden Globes look

Standard
Sally Hansen Copper Penny – Adele’s Golden Globes look

I have a very important question: why aren’t more people talking about Adele’s nails at the Golden Globes?  Seriously, I thought they were stunning!  Of course, I always think Adele is stunning.  (Sometimes I like to pretend that I look like Adele. Then I realize that no mortal could be that gorgeous, so I have to check myself a bit.)  I also love her Golden-Globe winning song, which was the title song for Skyfall.

I found lots of conflicting information regarding her manicure.  I even saw a major website claim that she was wearing Man With the Golden Gun from the OPI Skyfall collection, which, clearly no!  Almost all information pointed to Sally Hansen, and it seemed that the most likely suspect was Sally Hansen’s Copper Penny.

Lo and behold, when I saw Copper Penny in the drugstore, it was a match!  Not only that, but I had been eyeing that polish for awhile, so I figured it was a sign.  I took the plunge and got it.

Is she not gorgeous?

Is she not gorgeous? The woman AND the polish!

I decided to try to recreate Adele’s  manicure at home.  Multiple sources said that underneath Copper Penny, Adele’s manicurist had applied a base coat of Sally Hansen So Much Fawn.  I don’t have that color, and the closest thing I did have Wet n Wild Dreamy Poppy.  Either way, I think that a base coat of pink-coral polish definitely gives Copper Penny a pinkish glow that I didn’t expect, but it’s pretty!

Copper Penny applied like a dream, but I had to be patient with coverage.  What you see here is one coat of Dreamy Poppy and 3-4 thin-medium coats of Copper Penny, believe it or not – and as with most glitters, removal is a real pain, and the pain is compounded with each layer you apply.  (Even the foil removal method didn’t completely work for removal on this one, and it’s always worked for me.)

That said, after I put two coats of Seche Vite on top, it wore like a dream.  No chipping, no molting in big hunks. (Yuck! Hate that!) Also, in regular sunlight, it appears a lot more of a solid glitter than what the pictures show, just like Adele’s.  It’s only up close and personal that you can see the gaps in coverage.

Bottom line, I’m a real sucker for copper, so I’m glad I’ve got this in my arsenal!  If you like blingy copper, it’s a no-brainer for your polish collection.

Sally Hansen can be found at most drugstores, Target, Wal-Mart, etc.  I couldn’t find any information on whether this will be in their permanent collection or not, so you may want to pick it up now if you really really like it.  Wear it the next time you’re belting out “Skyfall” in the shower!  (What, is that just me?)

Model’s Own – Copper Pot

Model’s Own – Copper Pot

Hello all!  It’s almost New Year’s Eve, and I haven’t blinged out the nails yet.  It’s pretty cold and snowy here – not quite at The Shining levels, but getting there.  So I just felt the need to paint my nails with something warm and glowing.

Enter one of my untrieds, Copper Pot from Model’s Own.  I got it from Harlow & Co. when they were doing free shipping after Thanksgiving.  In fact, I got several Model’s Own polishes, because I’d wanted to try them for awhile but never have.  It was hard deciding which ones to order, but Copper Pot was unambiguously at the top of my list because I’m a sucker for warm polishes.

On a day like today, it’s no surprise that I immediately reached for this polish.  From the bottle, Copper Pot looked like the perfect coppery-gold,  super-warm polish I needed to chase away the cold.

ModelsOwnCopperPotNails123012

This is two thinnish coats plus Seche Vite.  I really liked the formula, and application was a dream – not too thick, not too thin. I did have one issue with the brush, because it unscrewed from the white cap when I was trying to open the bottle.  But I was able to fix that.  So far, so good!

Unfortunately, the color was  different from what I expected by looking at the bottle.  It’s definitely a warm colored polish like I wanted – sort of shimmery, but not metallic, as I expected.  However,  I anticipated it would be a bit more brown or coppery.  It’s straight up yellow gold!  (I’d actually like to compare this  to Zoya Goldie sometime, to give you an idea of the goldness.)

Here’s a bottle shot to show you why I thought it might be a little less gold:

ModelsOwnCopperPotBottle123012

See what I mean?  Coppery brown accents all over the place.

Don’t get me wrong – I love the color, and the formula was fabulous, so I’m still a happy camper.  Anything that can remind me of the sun during the darkest days of the year is a great thing!  I’ll definitely be wearing this again, although I’ll also be on a perpetual lookout for the perfect coppery-gold polish.  (Feel free to give me suggestions in comments!)

Have a good New Year’s Eve!  And if you’re someplace cold, stay warm!

Spring 2013 nail preview – an ode to the beach, plus pastels x 1000!

Standard

Oh my gosh…both The Crumpet and My Boyfriend Hates Makeup (two of my favorite bloggers, by the way) pointed out this excellent spring nail polish preview from Whale’s Nails:

Nail Polish in 2013

I don’t know where she got all the great info, but there’s two collections each from China Glaze and OPI!  Not to mention the Butter London spring collection and a lot more.

Looks like we’re seeing a lot of nods to the beach (can you even handle that  OPI sand collection?) as well as pastels EVERYWHERE!  Since I can see about 18 inches of snow out my window, I loooove contemplating springtime nails.  Thanks for the post, Whale’s Nails!
