Lawn gnome nail art

Standard

Hellooooo!  I finally did a bit of nail art the other day.  Inspired by these cookies I saw on Pinterest, I decided to paint a little lawn gnome on my thumb.  Here ’tis:

What a cutie!

What a cutie!

I’m not all about my lawn (thankfully, my dad cuts my lawn because he’s into that stuff and he’s super generous).   However, I’m all about cute & tacky, so thumbs up to Mr. Gnome!

For the base color behind the design (and the color on the rest of my nails), I used E.L.F. Nude, which I actually like as a “Band Aid But Better” color on me.  I’m always after a perfect nude color, so I’ll be revisiting that one!  It applies fairly smoothly, although it required three coats.

Mr. Gnome was made out of China Glaze Salsa (my favorite red!), Fingerpaints Paper Mache (my favorite white!), Rescue Beauty Lounge Concrete Jungle (my favorite grey!), Wet n Wild Black Creme (my favorite…oh, you get the picture!), and Sally Hansen Grass Slipper, with an outline of a Stripe-Rite black striper.  I used some nail tape to get the triangular design, and I had to be really careful with the striper to maintain the lines.  I did OK, but I think I may try black acrylic next time.

Also, this is the first time I tried Out the Door as a topcoat for nail art, and…bad bad bad!  It started to streak all the colors together.  I had to actually repaint some of the nude background.  I only used Out the Door because I ran out of Seche – it’s OK for regular polish, but it’s not gonna happen again with nail art!!  LOL!!

Hope you like it!

May 22 is now Polish Pals Day!

Standard

Perhaps this is beyond my authority, but…I’m declaring today Polish Pals Day across the entire universe!  It’s my polish pal Katie P’s birthday, so I wanted to give a shout out to all the polish pals out there.

What is a polish pal?  It’s a friend who doesn’t just tolerate your nail polish obsession, but actually encourages it! Whenever I’m looking for new polish ideas or trying to decide which parts of a collection to buy (answer: all of them!) or which brands are the best (answer: all of them!), Katie P’s always there to compare notes!

What are some traits of a polish pal?  Ask yourself these questions:

  • Is the potential for epic swaps so great that you squee every time you get a package in the mail with their return address?
  • When you’re in the middle of a polish display and can’t decide what to get, do you call/text this person?
  • When you say you have 200 polishes, is their response “Why don’t you have more – lack of shelf space?”
  • Was your most contentious debate regarding how to store and organize polish?

If so, you might have a polish pal!

In Katie’s honor, I’m wearing OPI I Eat Mainely Lobster (which is where Katie lives and it’s coral, which Katie loves).  The accent nail is  Glitzology Cruella (because we both love Glitzology and puppies, and it was a gift from her).

So – who are your polish pals?  Give a shout out to them in comments!  And also, please wish Katie P a super happy birthday!

LynB Designs – Thor’s Hammer: Swatches and Review

Standard

It’s been quite the sci fi weekend for me!  With the premiere of Star Trek and the season finale of Dr. Who, I was in nerd heaven.  I’d say more about both events, but I have too many thoughts & questions…and since I don’t know who has & hasn’t seen them (or even who cares), I’ll shut up about them.  As River Song would say, “Spoilers!”

In honor of this sci fi weekend, I decided to try my new bottle of Thor’s Hammer from LynBDesigns.  (I assume you know Thor’s place in sci fi from his own movie and/or the Avengers.  If not, go see one or both!)  I have a number of LynB polishes thanks to her frequent awesome sales, which can be 40-50% off sometimes.  Plus, her polish ideas are always so innovative – and the names are awesome!

According to Lyn’s blog, Thor’s Hammer is ” a clear based glitter that has brown, copper holo, and gold holo glitters that are fine cut. Small silver holo squares, and small silver hexes.”  To me, it gives the effect of hot cocoa mix plus snowflakes!  (And yeah, it’s spring here and that’s not a seasonal image, but it’s the first thing that came to mind.  If anyone’s reading this in the Southern Hemisphere, enjoy the imagery.)

Unfortunately, Thor’s Hammer is limited edition polish, and it appears not to be currently stocked in the LynB Etsy shop.  I was able to get my hands on a bottle when I answered a trivia question she put up on her Facebook page earlier this month, and her generous prize to me was Thor’s Hammer plus one other polish.  (It was donated by a fellow LynB enthusiast, Becky, who I can’t thank enough either!)  I couldn’t have been more thrilled, because this glitter is right up my alley!

On to the pictures:

LynBThorsHammerFull

LynBThorsHammerMacro

This was two coats of Thor’s Hammer over two coats of Zoya Jinx (which I loooooove too – maybe I’ll post more on that one later). I topped it with one coat of Seche.

Application was stellar!  I had no problem getting all the different sizes of glitter out of the bottle with minimal fishing, and the underlying base didn’t clump or get sticky, nor was it too runny to hold the glitter.

I’m super happy with this polish, and I’ll be wearing this look again!  Thanks, Lyn!

Easter nails – Pysanky! (Ukranian Easter Eggs)

Standard

It does NOT seem like it’s almost Easter.  Nope.  Uh-uh.  It’s March 24, and it just snowed about 4″ (and it hasn’t stopped).  This is unbelievable.

And yet, I must accept the fact that Easter is next week!  Know why?  Because my friend Katie P. (Her name is Katie, but I always add the “P.” because Facebook tells me to) clued me in that there is a spring nail art contest over at Lydia’s Nails.  I hadn’t planned on entering, but I’m snowbound, and the wheels in my head started turning, and voila.

Those wheels in my head came up with the idea of painting my nails like pysanky, or Ukranian Easter eggs.  My dad’s dad’s family comes from a region of the world that could have been Poland, or maybe the Ukraine, possibly Austria. (If you know world history, you know that region is messy.)  In any event, they’re Slavic, but they didn’t do anything specifically Slavic to celebrate the holiday. Easter to us meant going to Mass, Easter baskets, and a lot of ham.

However, I was  introduced to pysanka (plural term) when I met my husband, whose dad’s family is Slovak and also Byzantine Catholic.  Easter is a big deal to these folks – enough that part of their celebration involves spending  hours making complicated Easter eggs by dipping eggs into wax, scraping off a design, dipping the eggs in dye, and repeating over and over and over.  The end result is these incredibly delicate (and therefore sometimes temporary) works of art.

Given the intricate designs of pysanky, as well as the frustration level of the process, I think any nail artist can relate!

I’ve attempted to make pysanka before, and it didn’t go well.  But I figured I could make an easy approximation on my nails.  I think it turned out OK!  I know that the colors don’t necessarily scream Easter-peeps-jelly-beans-super-pastel-daffodils, but this is how a pysanky looks.  The colors and designs have  significance, so I tried to go as traditional as possible.

The designs I picked are: pointer finger is wheat (good health / good harvest); the middle finger is a net (Jesus & fishing); ring finger is curls (defense & protection); and pinky is pine needles (health / stamina / eternal youth).

PysankyAll

The thumb is a deer for wealth / prosperity.  You can see the deer better in this picture:

Pysankythumb

All of it was hand-drawn, except for using some striping tape on the ring and pinky fingers for the main straight lines.

Colors used are as follows:

Base colors –

Thumb: OPI Dating a Royal

Pointer: Sally Girl Banana

Middle: Finger Paints Paper Mache (my favorite white creme)

Ring: China Glaze Salsa (my favorite red creme)

Pinky: Wet N Wild Black creme (my favorite black creme – so affordable, and such good coverage!

Nail art was done with Stripe Right black, white, and green stripers, and a Sinful Colors red striper.  Also, the underlayer of the ring and pinky fingers is Finger Painter Paper Mache, which was the base of the striping tape.

I hope you enjoy the design!  And to anyone who’s here from Lydia’s Nails, feel free to follow me on Facebook and Twitter.
